| McDog Music Trading List: Oddball, Spoken, Comedy, Psychedelic (And Worse) If Dogs Run Free, Why Can't We? SEE ALSO MY NUTTY DVDS ODDBALL: • The Adventures of Dave and Bubba Louie - The Lost Episodes studio A (1cd) Apparently this is a "found" recording of two early 80s stoner dudes, doing what a lot of us tried to do with our first tape recorders -- make their own funny record. In this case they try to do Cheech & Chong with a 4-track, and it is C&Cish enough to have made it this far...plus some there's anonymous 4-track collages. • Arcesia: Reachin' The very rare outsider psych classic . A+ (1cd) Legend has it, Johnny Arcesia was a middle aged, east coast lounge lizard who moved to Haight Ashbury in 1968, dropped one hit too many, and reinvented himself as an "enlightened" acid rock star. He produced this lone, privately pressed LP, featuring a competent, uncredited psychedelic rock backing band. What makes this album a psych cult classic is Johnny's incredible vocal delivery (once described as "constipated" -- but I prefer "overwrought") and outrageously bizarre lyrics. • Are Parasites In Your Food? An hour-long promo tape for a holistic "parasite cleansing" product, featuring testimonials regarding worm-laden bowel movements, statistics about tapeworm infection, et cetera. A very strange listen. Really. • Batman A-Go-Go aka Batman Please Deliver Us From Evil studio compilation A (1cd) Holy auditory assault, Batman! If you were a big fan of the 60s camp TV workout, you'll love this: 34 tracks of the Batman theme, Batvillan themes, batsoundtracks, and much more batdrivel, performed by the likes of Nelson Riddle, Jan & Dean, The Ventures, Standells, Link Wray, and a menagerie of studio types... • Maurizio Bianchi: Triumph Of The Will originally released in 1981 on LP, this freaky audio landscape features nazi speeches underscored with electronics. • Big Daddy: Sgt Pepper's Rhino Records A+ (1cd) Big Daddy reinterprets the entire Beatles album in the style of various 1950s dowop & rockabilly artists. Some songs work better than others. A lot better.• Bombay The Hard Way - Guns, Cars & Sitars various studio A+ (1cd) This is actually not as bad as it sounds, ahhh... appears. Once you get past the bad song titles it's pretty funky. But, oh, those songs: The Good, The Bad And The Chutney, Ganges a Go-Go, Fists Of Curry, Swami Safari, to name a few... sort of spaghetti western meets James Bond in Balwalpur. • The Droplift Project various A (1cd) The Droplift Project is a collection of audio collage pieces made largely from appropriated sources. That means stolen. This wacky cd features 29 tracks from various artists, all containing uncleared samples. Copies of this cd are "reverse-shoplifted" - snuck into stores and left for others to buy. Doncha love concept art? • Hayseed Dixie Mercy Lounge, Nashville 7/11/03 sbd A (2cd) a wild country group, named as a tribute to AC/DC (say Hayseed Dixie over & over real fast), covering AC/DC classics, with a little Kiss tossed in for good measure... thing is, they're playing banjoes, mandolins, fiddles & acoustic guitars • Abbie Hoffman: Wake Up, America! This OOP LP from 1969 is all Hoffman: irreverent, blasphemous and very funny. (1cd) • Incredibly Strange Music, Volumes I and II various (2cd). Wow. Strange, indeed, as this mostly-1940s collection of early electronic and experimental music takes you places that, if they aren't incredible, are at least irritating. • Jim Jones: Jonestown, Guyana, November 18, 1978 Chilling collection from various sources, culminating in all of Jones' exhortations to his followers to committ mass suicide. Sound quality sucks, but that just adds to the creepy realism. (1cd) • Ken Kesey - The Acid Tests Discs #1, #2 and #3 of Volume I San Francisco 1965-66 A (3cd) RIP, Ken • Ken Kesey & Ken Babbs - The Merry Pranksters Acid Tests Vol #1 San Francisco 1965-66 A (1cd) King Mob KMOB3 • Dr. Timothy Leary: You Can Be Anyone This Time Around Recorded in 1969, this OOP LP includes a groovy cut called Live And Let Live, which features Steve Stills and John Sebastian on guitar, Jimi Hendrix on bass and Buddy Miles on drums. A (1cd) • Mad Magazine: "Fink Along With Mad" and "Mad Twists Rock 'N' Roll" LP>CDR A (1cd) As the trader who sent this said: Both Big Top LPs, plus the rare "What, Me Worry?"/ "Potrezebie" single on ABC/Paramount. Taken from VG copies, so there's still surface noise here. I like these records, but not enough to spend 50 bucks for a click-free copy of "When My Pimples Turned To Dimples". • Charles Manson - Lie recorded at The Beach Boys studio in Van Nuys, California, 8/68 A (1cd) I've seen a copy of this freaky OOP LP -- in 1969 before the Tate murders. They say Charlie went over the edge when this album was rejected by Warner Bros. • Joe Meek: I Hear A New World This eccentric English record producer today enjoys a cult following. This LP was produced 1960, but it was never released. Joe shoulda checked out Howie Menger (below) but he committed suicide in 1967. It's a concept album about life on the moon. It was intended as a showcase for Meek's production talents, and uses a strange mixture of effects, found sounds, varispeeded voices and Hawaiian guitar to produce a set of ambient songs. All instrumental except for the title track, which shockingly uses tape speed to create little "chipmunk" voices... yeah, a very strange trip. • Howard Menger: "Authentic Music From Another Planet" B+/A- (1cd) slightly hissy from old tape transfer, but who cares? Two rare pieces of 1950s UFO audio: "I have been instructed by a person from another planet to bring this music to the attention of the people on this earth..." These are the words of former sign-painter Howard Menger, who, throughout his life, was in alleged contact with beings from other planets. In this performance Howie raps about UFOs and aliens and how he can hear music from other planets. Menger actually plays his own composition, The Song From Saturn. The bonus is Albert K. Bender's address to the 7th annual conference of Scientific Ufologists. No, not the Bender on Futurama. This Alfred K. Bender wrote a book entitled Flying Saucers and the Three Men. It described astral projection to a secret base in Antarctica inhabited by male, female and bisexual creatures. Oh yeah... • Mondo Scratcho A special compilation by Brazen Brian Belovarac (1cd). As he explains: A personal compilation of thrift store finds - 29 tracks, 80 minutes. No de-noising, hence the title. Lots of cash-in/ real people/ lounge/ religious weirdness. Look up understated in your dictionary. A truly wacky collection of outsider/naive/folk errors of judgement, with a special emphasis on high school marching bands and christian choruses. • Naked Microphone Various authentic radio "bloopers" from the 1930s to the 1960s. Funny, but also a fascinating time capsule, with vintage local news broadcasts, DJ patter, etc. A (1cd) • OHM, Early Gurus Of Electronic Music, Volumes I, II and III various (3cd). They say Gurus, and they mean it: digitize out with classics from such masters as Clara Rockmore, John Cage, Edgar Varèse, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Klaus Schutze, Brian Eno and many, many more. • Only In America, Vol I and II Compilation of the odd, odder and oddest (2cd). Basically, it's 57 tracks of stuff only a recording studio owner could love. I see The Shaggs have a token cut -- that should tell you all you need to know. • Pissed-Off Geezers From The Pre-Love Generation Wacky collection of mean guys doing their thing. Check it out as Buddy Rich rants, raves, and mercilessly fires musicians; Frank Sinatra does it his way (or the highway); Murray Wilson mercilessly berates Brian in a studio while they work on Help Me, Rhonda; Martin & Lewis get ugly; and a very interesting bonus: takes one to 11 of Elvis doing Little Sister. Sound quality: hardly matters. • The Prisoner File #3 Obviously, there are two previous ones, but this is still cool, cause it covers the music & dialogue from the last episodes of this fascinating TV show. Still, it's a tad wacky tolisten to, cause it's disjointed from the visuals... but still, if you're a Prisoner fan, this'll take ya back. A (1cd) • Product Music Japanese boot of 60s/70s "industrial show tunes of the products we trust"... listen in on muzak that sells the virtues of American Standard, 7-11, Westinghouse, Ford, Borden's, Exxon, etc. A nice balance of intense irony and sublime melodicism. OK, form over content. • Reefer Madness: A Collection Of Vintage Drug Songs, 1927-1945 Various (1cd). You think Baby Boomers discovered drugs? Ha. Your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were snorting and rolling, shooting and rockin to some great stuff. Check out the lowdown from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Bessie Smith, Fats Waller, Benny Goodman and all those other old dopers. • Mary Stewart Relfe: "The 666 System" date & location unknown aud B+/A- (1cd). Relfe is an apocalyptic fundamentalist convinced that credit cards and UPC bar codes are a sign of iminent parousia. You can probably still dig up the book that made her in/famous, "The New Money System", but why? This cd features MSR laying out the fine details of the second coming, which is closely linked to credit cards, retailers, and grocery stores. What? Sadly, the ultimate villians are the international jewish banking conspiracy, so MSR ends up being just another christian nazi. Most disturbing of all, this rant appears to be an audience recording (i.e., not produced and distributed by Relfe herself) so it's one of a kind. Creepy, strangely compelling, and thankfully rare.• San Lucas Band: Music Of Guatemala ABC-Command COMS-9001 1975 OOP LP A (1cd) The cat who sent me this claims: Indescribably strange LP on the ABC/Command label from the mid-70s featuring a ceremonial Guatemalan ensemble that sounds EXACTLY like the Guckenheimer Sauerkraut Band. Either a sly, elaborate spoof of Nonesuch-style world music albums (complete with academic insert) or a really bizarre world music album. I don't agree -- I think it's real, but not the kind of music you'd expect -- the first three songs are marches, but the kind of super slow, disjointed, chaotic, funny sad funeral marches you'd hear in a melodramatic mexican movie. The rest of the songs seem trad spanish arrangements... but the band, admittedly, is fairly loose, is oom-pah-pah... and the mixing is atrocious. • The Shaggs Rounder Records A+ (1cd) Painfully untalented, these three girls were harassed into the studio by their crazy father, who was convinced they could cut an album, sell a million of 'em, and pay for daddy's retirement. Sounds a lot like Murray Wilson, but these girls certainly aren't the Beach Boys... Still, they're ironically famous today, as quotes on the cd testify: "The Shaggs. Better than The Beatles -- even today" - Frank Zappa... "They bring my mind to a complete halt" - Carla Bley... • Better Than The Beatles: A Tribute To The Shaggs Unknown source A+ (1cd) Now we're reaching the outer limits: outsider musicians playing homage to the idiot songs of one of the zanier outsider groups. This cd should be registered as a musical weapon of mass destruction. • William Shatner: The Hofstra Lecture sbd A+ (1cd). The very-spaced Captain Kirk mind-melds wacky monologues, Q&A, and relentless promotion for the first Star Trek movie in this 75 minute 1977 session. Classic examples of his overwrought, breathy delivery. Tough to sit thru in one go, which is part of the thrill, as this cd is one loooong track.• The Inessential William Shatner various sources sbd A (1cd). A great collection of Captain Kirk's zanier moments, including his hysterical version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", Star Trek outtakes, radio interviews, beer commercials -- hey, the whole inessential oeuvre! • William Shatner: The Transformed Man studio A (1cd). The album that started it all for Captain Kirk back in 1968, when he wasn't doing cheesy TV ads for Safeway. According to the original album's liner notes, the heart of this collection is a concept that reads, thankfully, like the overblown pretentious nonsense we've come to cherish here in oddball-land. The concept? The tracks are all arranged in pairs, in order to show the contradictions inherent in the human condition. Wow. Heavy. • Shooby Taylor: The Human Horn WFMU Radio 1983 A- (1cd) Shooby was a postal employee who recorded 18 "songs" in New York in 1983. Basically he sings scat over familiar traditional pop songs and hymns. But what singing! His scat phrases are, well, like singing in tongues, and you can actually hear it when he shifts into the unknown and lets go completely and unselfconsciously. This set was compiled by WFMU radio and sold as a fundraising cassette. This is a dub off one of those cassettes. • Sin Alley, Volumes I and II various (1cd) It sounds worse than it is... which is a monster collection of 50s pre-rock nuttiness of the hillbilly/country variety. White trash dance music. • Songs In The Key Of Z Gammon Records A+ (1cd) In this cd, longtime wacky New York DJ Irwin Chusid finally cashes in on all the zany drek he plays on his outsider music radio show. Arcesia (see above) is represented, alng with a buncha other oddballs, but then there's tracks by Tiny Tim (OK, I can see that) and (oops) Captain Beefheart! If I was Don I'd be suing over that... • The Sun City Girls - Horse Cock Phepner OOP 1987 LP. Absolutely amazing collection of funny/profane songs done with some surprising professionalism. I have no idea who these girls/guys are... however, their dirty ditty about Nancy Reagan really should be heard by everyone at least once in their lifetime. • Touch Tone Terrorists I thought this was an artsy jazz ensemble til I played it... in reality, this is a collection of 20 crank telephone calls. Like what Bart does to Moe, but more plot-oriented. Some are funny in spite of themselves -- but dramatic irony this heavy can only be taken in small doses. OK, lemme put it another way -- it's 20 Cheech & Chong sketches. (1cd) • Tuba Tuba Nijmwegen, The Netherlands 11/02 FM A (1cd) yes, it really is what is says: two tuba players, plus accordion and drums... what else do you need? • Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds A wacko scifi musical classic from Columbia Records A+ (2cd). Here's a great idea if you were very, very stuck for concepts in 1978: make a musical of HG Well's alien invasion classic. And just to make it interesting, let's cast this unlikely production with the likes of Richard Burton, Julie Covington (from Godspell), David Essex, Phil Lynott (from Thin Lizzy), and Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues. Actually, it's pretty funky, and I digitized this from an unplayed vinyl copy.• "We'll Be Right Back" A Solo Production by Don Joyce of Negativland sbd A (1cd). A chilling collage of actual radio broadcasts. Not much info on this -- as the cover says, "All source material for this recording originated during World War II. Only FX have been added". Made in The Netherlands in an original limited edition of 1000. • Whistles For The Birds Basic Hip's compilation of whistling and whistling-related recordings. Mostly the songa are sung by humans, but there's a lotta tracks in which our feathered friends star. studio A (1cd) • White Panthers - Music Is Revolution Selections from the White Panther Party & The Rainbow People's Party Central Planning Committee meetings and archive 1967-1971. John Sinclair lives! A- (1cd) • Women Of The SS This self-titled exercise in madness is another OOP, or barely legit, fusion of electronics and spoken, panted, murbled and generally nasty nazi stuff. • Richard Serling's Wigan Sounds isn't really wigan, and Richard might be Rod. Crazy collection of mindlessly uptempo pop non-hits that all sound suspiciously like hits. THE THEREMIN ON CD ![]() • "Art Of The Theremin" studio A (1cd) yes, here's a disc featuring Theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore on that sci-fi-sounding instrument, playing classical compositions, accompanied by piano... wacky, eerie human-sounding • "The Theremin, Volume I" BBC Radio3 A (1cd) interviews and playing from 6/11/96 and 6/5/97 • "The Theremin, Volume II" Radio Scotland A (1cd) interviews and playing from two shows in 1999 • "The Theremin, Volume III" BBC Radio3 A (1cd) interviews and playing from 1996... includes information & examples of the early mellotron, featuring Rick Wakeman SPOKEN WORD JG BALLARD • BBC Interviews #1 2001/2003 FM A- (1cd) three interviews: one on The Complete Short Stories, the other two on Millennium People • BBC Interviews #2 2002 FM A- (1cd) one interview on Empire Of The Sun JG BALLARD VARIOUS • Seven 30-minute radio dramas based on the short stories of JG Ballard, commissioned & broadcast on the CBC FM show, "The Vanishing Point" 1988 A+ (4cd or 7cd) Stories chosen include: The Dead Astronaut, Escapement, Having A Wonderful Time, The Cloud Sculptors Of Coral-D, News From The Sun, Low Flying Aircraft and A Question Of Re-entry. FT came up with the idea of trying to syndicate some of these shows by editing together 12 one hour length LPs and offering them to subscribers. Only about 200 copies were pressed up and self released, and contained hours of Firesign material not available anywhere else, including such classics as: Live At The Ash Grove, Power Is Trouble & Trouble’s Not Funny, I Could Always Shoot Him With The Camera, Somebody Put A Mickey In The Ground Zero, All We Have To Fear Is Me, Deputy Dan Will Find Us No Matter Where We Go, Was There A Cow On The Moon, Being On Radio Is More Fun Than Watching TV, Dr Memory’s Laff-A-While News, (Hope You’re Enjoying The) All Nite Images, Welcome To Microorganism State Park, and Is This The Machine That Answers No ‘n’ Yes. • "Firesign World" Live at the Westbury Music Fair 5/20/74 aud A- (1cd) • "Questions And Answers" UCLA Santa Cruz 5/9/75 sbd A (1cd) • David Suskind Show, New York 5/74 FM A (1cd) interview plus a condensed version of Nick Danger, Third Eye • "George L. JONATHAN WINTERS • "Is Terminator 3" studio A (1cd) One of Winters's early-90s audiobooks consisting of answering machine messages he left to a friend. Transfer from factory copy. VARIOUS COMPILATIONS: • See/Hear I studio 1967 or 1968 A- (1cd) I recorded this from my copy of this ultra-rare OOP LP. It's a "recordmagazine" edited by Wayne Carr and Jim Brown of Vancouver, BC, featuring poems and avante-garde music by hip Canadian artists like bp nichol, Lionel Kearns, Bruce Clarke, Lloyd Burritt, Ross Barrett, Roy Cooper, Al Neil Trio. Tad scratchy in places.• All This And World War II A (2cd) From a 1976 out-of-print soundtrack LP. This movie showed WWII scenes to the music of Beatles covers. Live performances by pretty well all the hot acts of the late 60s, including The Who doing their famous blow-up version of I Can See For Miles. Sound quality varies, but is generally good. Includes a lot of the SmoBro schtick. • Tribute To The Beatles: Abbey Road 2001 Fukuoka Sun Palace, Japan 11/13/01 sbd A (2cd) Cats like Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren, Ann Wilson, John Entwhistle, and many more gather to sing their hits and few classics from The Fab Four. • Beatle Songs: Rainforest Benefit, Carnegie Hall 4/27/98 (1cd) Sting's Thing in New York goes retro with the likes of Billy Joel, Elton John, James Taylor, Roberta Flack, Joe Cocker, and, of course, the Stinger... all doing covers of 19 Beatles songs. The sound could be better, but it's not bad. • A TV Christmas Dinner Laserlight Records, various studio A+ (1cd) This is as bad as it sounds, sort of a salisbury steak of xmas blather. The awful point was to get 60s TV stars to sing seasonal favourites, so here you have xmas cliches sung by the likes of Gene Autrey, Jim Nabors, The Cartwrights, the Partridge Family, the Brady Kids, the Chipmunks... get the picture? Think of this as the stupid sitcom of cds. Or a Greatest Twits collection... • Christmas Cocktails Capital Records, various studio A+ (1cd) Not quite cool in the daddy-oh sense, but cool in the upscale 1950s downtown chrome & naugahyde bar sense. Billy May, Peggy Lee, Ray Anthony, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole -- those whitebread warblers that drove our parents drunk crazy with seasonal cheer. • Christmas Cocktails, Part Two Capital Records, various studio A+ (1cd) More of the same, except a few of these songs slip into the early 1960s. The Ventures play Frosty The Snowman, for example. And that may be as good as it gets. • Hipster's Holiday Rhino Records, various studio A+ (1cd) As you might expect, Rhino doesn't mess around. This baby's got songs from 1946 to 1989, with an emphasis on the 1950s and 60s. A fairly esoteric lineup of singers offers up a selection of xmas songs I bet you've never heard of before... unless you & your family sit around and harmonize on something like We Wanna See Santa Do The Mambo, or Zat You, Santa Claus. PSYCHEDELIC MAYHEM: • Arcesia: Reachin' - A nice transfer from a mint copy of this very rare outsider psych classic. (6cd) • Psychedelic Promos. Another zany 3-cd collection of your favourite 60s bands and stars doing radio commercials for concerts, music equipment and consumer goods... like coca cola. Freaky in one way, fascinating in another, there's nothing like hearing a bunch of rock stars sell out by shilling for The Man. This collection was culled from radio broadcast tapes of the era, and the sound quality ranges from B+ to A+ (3cd) • Vancouver Psychedelia, (VHS Tape). Two hours of Vancouver bands on the CBC's teen music shows, Let's Go and Where It's At. Featuring The Collectors, The Poppy Family, My Indole Ring, Papa Bear's Medicine Show, Tomorrow's Eyes, Seeds of Time, Mother Tucker's Yellow Duck and The Shockers. Much was shot at the famous Retinal Circus, with ultra-rare commentary by Circus owner (the late) Roger Schiffer. Rare british collection series featuring UK psychotic freakbeat, pop-psych and full-blown psychedelia from the 1960s. I doubt if you've even heard of half the groups on this endless compilation, unless groovies like Human Instinct, The Buzz, The Peep Show, Felius Andromeda, The Zipps, The Flies, or any of a zillion other zany bands ring some acid bells. With an average of 25 songs per cd, this set delivers an impressive 275 ultra-rare songs. Like you care. (11cd) • Mynd The Gap, Vol. 1. Obscure british psychedelia... like, what else is new? (1cd) or so I thot, until I received this interesting email: "Hi Rick... My name is Iain Clark and many years ago I was the drummer in an obscure British band called Cressida, before I moved on to play with Uriah Heep. Yesterday I was browsing through one of an increasing number of sites that refer to Cressida (good example of early prog rock etc.!) and I suddenly saw a reference to a bootleg called Mynd the Gap and to my amazement it has 2 tracks by Cressida that I have not heard for 30 odd years. They were the original demos recorded before we got our recording contract. I then searched on this title and saw a link to your site where I see you have the Mynd the Gap cd. Is there any chance you'd be interested in making a copy for me?... I would be so interested to hear it again. If you could let me know if this is possible and I could then give you my address here in the Highlands of Scotland. Look forward to hearing from you. rgds, Iain Clark" ... Of course I sent him a copy! And he responded: "Many thanks. It had been 30 odd years since I last heard it. Recorded in the old Regent Sound Studio in Denmark Street in Soho, London (where the Stones recorded their first single!). It took me back instantly! Iain" • The Great British Psychedelic Trip. "Inside The Acid Temple" 1995 legit CD (Psych Out Records) Arlington, Texas (1cd). Limited collector’s edition of only 1000 copies. Includes Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, It's A Beautiful Day, Fraternity of Man, Indian Puddin And Pipe, Tim Hardin, Tripsichord, Little Eva and Marty Balin. Studio stuff A (2cd) RECORD COMPANY "SAMPLERS" These "sampler" albums were specially (and often flambouyantly) produced for radio stations and rock critics in the late 1960s, and were a clever marketing ploy by record companies who wanted to get a "sample" of their artistic stable's current work out to those who could flack or flog it... the best were by Warner/Reprise, who had a lot of the great acts, lots of money, and a kickass promo department... they started the phenomenon in 1969 with The Big Ball, followed by Schlagers, Songbook, Record Show, Zapped, Loony Tunes...and more. I was a rock critic in those days, and I got lots of them laid on me my by record execs... today they're super-rare, and their track listings are unbelievable... I'm currently digitizing all I can find in my vinyl collection, so this list will grow... • The 1969 Warner/Reprise Songbook studio>vinyl>cd A (1cd) tracks are as follows: 1.
