• Midas Club, Alphen a/d Rijn, 7/8/78 aud B/B+ (2cd) the trader reports this: An interesting thing happened in July l978. The Pretties reformed for just one-of reunion gig in Holland. This happened on Saturday July 8, at 22 o'clock at the Midas Club', Alphen aan de Rijn, and here's how it all happened: A Dutch Pretty Things fan, named Pete Dello, decided to open a Pretty Things workshop (don't askwhat that is!) in the mentioned club in July 1978. He travelled to London to ask Phil, Dick and Wally if they like to jam with the Dutch R'n'B-group, Long Way Blues, connected with the planned work-shop. Well, all three agreed and during the conversation the idea grew to ask John Povey and Skip Allen to join the three for a one-off Pretty Things reunion, playing all the old R'n'B songs of their early times. But an unexpected, unfair and offensive affair followed as a result of the Pretties act of goodwill. Trickster Pete Dello taped the concert and later released 10 tracks as a bootleg "Live 78" offering the record for £l0 in American and English magazines . The sound of the LP is bad and miserable, but the gig must have been a fantastic wild evening. They were the old Pretty Things as if it was 1964 -- playing wild, rough, aggressive, driving R'n'B with a wailing harmonica, sharp lead guitar by Dick Taylor and Allen's crashing drums. They still played the old 60s arrangements and the 600 people in the club enjoyed every minute of the set. The Pretties also played the hard-driving "Old Man Going'' from S.F.Sorrow, "I'm a King-Bee" and "Ealing Blues" are slow Chicago Blues numbers and the swinging "Paddington Jam" with its Status Quo like Boogie rhythm. On the last four tracks of side two Willem van Houten (gtr) and Leen Kok (dr, perc), of their supporting act, Long Way Blues, jammed with the Pretty Things. The Pretty Things had a great moment and were in fantastic form -- even Dick Taylor hadn't forgotten his hard rocking, guitar playing days.
Gorilla Beat: You had a lot of trouble with that guy, who at first animated you to reunite and then tried to make money off you.
Phil May: Yes, I was really shocked when I heard of the live record, he was offering in the papers. What happened was, he decided to get together for just one reunion gig, just for fun, so we went over there, even played for free and that was it. Some weeks later that bastard, who claimed to be "the world's greatest Pretty Things fan" came to me with this awful tape and told me that he had bought it for £50 to hinder a bootleg release, and then he asked me if I wanted to listen to the tape. But you know, it was made with a small cassette recorder, recording the yelling crowd banging their beer cans, and it is clear that the tape is really rubbish. However this Dutch guy asked me if I could make a record of the tape just for some fans and I said no, strictly! But some months later I found out that he was advertising for that live LP in America, and that he told everybody he had our permission to put the stuff out. He must have made a good deal with it and I could not hinder him to do it. Well, we have never seen a penny for it. (Phil May in an interview with Gorilla Beat 2/1/1985)

Immaculate sound and a truly stunning show captures the 30 year old Prince in his performance prime (the Lovesexy tour aftershows still remain his best ever).
