GRATEFUL DEAD
• Trips Festival, Vancouver, Gardens Auditorium, 7/29-30/66 sbd A (1cd) Deep Six #41
• Kresge Plaza, MIT 5/6/70 (2cd) According to the guy who traded me this: The Dead were scheduled to play in the Gym the next night, but they got there early and set up for a free outdoor concert in support of the campus strikes to protest the Kent State killings. This is a great example of what Jerry says in The Grateful Dead movie that they don't always know when they are playing well. Phil says, "This is getting kind of ridiculous. It's so cold we can't play for shit. I mean, it's a lot of fun and everything, but we're going to play some more and then split." Pigpen shouts "This microphone don't work so fuckin' good you guys!" They don't sound into it at all. But the jamming is just ferocious - "crackling with energy" as Jerry would put it. The jamming in Good Lovin' is as high energy as you have ever heard. It's the best early version Dancin' in the Streets you have ever heard. And the Morning Dew is pretty hot too. These incredibly hot licks that you have never heard them play before or after just come flying out of nowhere.

IVORY LIBRARY
• "Costume" studio A (1cd)
• "Aleatory Music" sbd A (2cd) Another enthusiastic trader, who wrote: I'm sending you all of the Ivory Library, because the 1st EP and live tune fit on the end of the two discs of Aleatory Music. You're the first person to express an interest so you get the bonus! I listened to their Costume last night and was blown away. I also cannot believe, though I was their at the concert, that the live song is live. Heard very many studio recordings much worse than it - and the subtleties of this tune are hard to express live. Trivia on it: Recorded in Madison, WI for an lp compilation called the Mad Scene and recorded by later superstar producer Butch Vig of Nirvana fame. But then he was just plain Butch, that annoying drummer who owns Smart Studios. Everyone was amazed that he could record anything but decent drum sounds for this album! Somewhere I have a very rare album by an early band of his called Sometimes Y that I should digitize. Someday.
