Lawrence Russell
Words & Music

I first heard from Lawrence Russell in 1971 - literally - when I was a rockhead reviewer at the Georgia Straight, Vancouver's (then) evil leftie underground newspaper.

Lawrence was living in Victoria, and he mailed me a copy of DNA 1 -- a tape of recordings by writers and artists associated with LR -- to see if anything would happen. I thought it was cool. The first review brought in requests for copies from around the world, and LR was off to the races.

Through DNA, LR published some of the most outrageous sonic stuff ever, with contributions from name brand boys like George McWhirter, Paul Green, Wayne Strandlund, Andreas Schroeder... and more.

He retired in the late 1990s, following a 30-year gig teaching Creative Writing at the University of Victoria, exiting the joint as a full professor and Chairman of the Department. UVic's loss is our gain, however. Now, Lawrence has time for some writing and reviewing... about movies, books, TV shows -- all things of mass culture interest -- but spends most of his time writing and recording in his studio, and gathering contributors for his Culture Court website.
