The Beginning and The End of Hwy 1 Key West Key West. Funky, yet junky. It's about 150 miles from Miami, but it's at the end of the world. There must be 100 miles of keys from Key Largo to Key West... and aside from about 30 miles of bridges, the road is one long strip mall of american cheezy retailing run amok... Key West is hampered by its own past. At one time it musta been supercool to grab a DC3 from Miami, fly to KW, hang out, then catch that last plane back Sunday night. Today, it's infected with cruise ships, Ernest Hemingway's house and a daily sunset ceremony. This place seems to be a combination of Ft. Lauderdale and New Orleans. The main drag is restaurants, bars and cheap T-shirt joints... however, we did manage to find The Green Parrot Bar, with its great ad slogan: Keeping the men and women of Key West lubricated since 1890. Life along the famous 7-Mile Bridge... which now serves as a "found sculpture" for drivers weary of the strip mall sights along the way. Banyan trees... very interesting.
